Ashtanga yoga is...

a series of poses, handed down by Sri K Pattabhi Jois, starting with Sun Salutations, to standing poses, through sitting poses, and finally to inversions. Practiced in flow with the breath, it is a rigorous, intimate practice where once you've learned and memorized the series as guided by your teacher, you become your own teacher. As your experience of the practice deepens, your teacher continues to guide and encourage. With steady practice, you can see your progress because the practice remains the same. Poses that made you laugh at the impossibility of it all will one day just happen.

Ashtanga is not necessarily for the naturally flexible or strong. It is for the person who through hard work and consistency would like to find those qualities in their own body.
