Qi is
energy, the vital force in the universe—the Sanskrit
translation is Prana. Qigong is loosely defined as the study of breath,
and is
based on the principles of Chinese medicine. The practice opens
acupuncture
channels and meridians, and has been shown to restore health.
Coordinating
the breath with gentle flexing of muscles moves
the qi energy through blockages, freeing the body’s
circulatory, respiratory,
neurological, glandular and lymphatic systems. This release supports
the immune
system and provides a feeling of wellbeing.
The system we follow includes a thorough self-massage, a standing
meditation,
five strengthening poses, and a cool down, all in about an hour. It is
safe,
simple, accessible, and the benefits are felt from the first
session— they only
get more profound as the practice deepens.
All
levels of experience are welcome. The practice can be
particularly helpful for people dealing with stress, illness, or injury.
